How to train like your favourite AFL stars

It’s no secret that AFL players have really, really great fitness. Have you ever wondered what it takes to train like your favourite footy stars?

Most serious players train using a combination of a few different training methods; plyometrics (explosive training) for speed, hypertrophy (weight training) for strength, and cardio training for endurance. It is also super important to have a solid stretching routine as well!

Here’s a breakdown of the different types of training:

Plyometric, or explosive training, is a technique that involves quick, powerful movements. These could be squat jumps, frog hops, jumping lunges or even push-ups. The benefit of this style of training is that it can tone the entire body, burn calories and improve cardiovascular health, all while also boosting your stamina and metabolism.

Hypertrophy, or weight training involves putting your muscles under strain in order to build them. This can be with the use of weights or a weight machine. Weight training can lead to increased strength and power, caloric expenditure and increased symmetry.

Cardio training is a very common style of training that can take many forms - running, walking, swimming, dancing, skiing, cycling just to name a few! The benefits of cardio are enormous. Cardio training can lead to many health benefits including increased heart health, reduction in blood pressure, regulation of blood sugars, and improvement of sleep.

And last, but definitely not least – Stretching. Stretching is such an important key component to any fitness routine. Not only does it improve your performance in physical activities, but stretching also decreases your risk of injuries, increases muscle blood flow and helps your joints move through their full range of motion.

As you can see, training like your favourite player is no easy task – but the results speak for themselves.
